Have you recently gotten domain name renewal notices from companies you've never heard of, asking if you want
to renew through them to save money? Now that there's competition in the domain registry services business,
many registrars offer reseller agreements where Internet Service Providers and others can offer reduced
pricing on domain registrations and renewals. This in itself is a good thing -- it used to be a monopoly
held by Network Solutions. Prices now range from $35 per year down to $6.95, depending on the top level
domain (i.e., COM, ORG, NET, CC, TV, WS).
What can be confusing is that you might now receive what looks like a bill from someone other than
Network Solutions, and it can be difficult to tell which bill to pay. The first thing to do is use
"whois" to look up your domain name and find the name of the registrar and the current expiration date.
You can then make informed decisions as to how you want to pay for your domain names.
Now that there are competing registrars, all of them have to talk to the same centralized database,
which is maintained by the NSI Registry. Each domain in that database contains information on the owner
such as your contact and billing address, and the name of the registrar (such as Network Solutions,
Register.com, ENOM.com). The registrars all pay the same wholesale rate to the NSI Registry for each domain name they
sell or renew, but they are free to charge whatever the market will bear for those domain names.
All domain registrars must be accredited by ICANN who ensures that
they are financially stable and that they have the technical expertise to operate a registry.

You are free to choose which registrar you want to work with. You can transfer a domain to another
registrar if you prefer. In many cases the rates and services they offer can be substantially less expensive
than using Network Solutions. The best time to transfer a name to another registrar is when you get
a renewal notice. A transfer does not carry over any balance from the former registrar, and involves a new
charge for the first year with the new registrar.
Tightweb.com is partnered with Network Solutions
/ VeriSign to resell domain names. We offer registrations
and renewals at $20 per year per name in the .com, .org and .net
domains, and can also register names in the .cc domain for $40
per year. Through us and Network Solutions, you'll have full control
over your domain name and can change your billing and contact
information online. You'll also receive renewal notices, and can
register for up to 10 years in advance.
